Around the world, women are leading the resistance. They're on the frontlines, challenging discrimination, the death penalty, and forced eviction from their homes.

Marielle and her driver were assassinated in Brazil after she spoke out for justice after police killed two young people.

Nonhle survived an attempt on her life — just for protesting against the mining of traditional Indigenous lands in South Africa. She’s still on a ‘hit list’.

Atena is in prison in Iran for campaigning against the death penalty. She’s kept in terrible conditions and her health has deteriorated.

And Vitalina was attacked in Ukraine, receiving chemical burns to her eyes — just for speaking out about hatred against the LGBTQI community.

These four women have all paid a price for defending their own rights and those of others.

Now it’s our turn to defend the defenders — sign the petition to demand justice for the murder of Marielle, and ensure safety for Nonhle, Atena and Vitalina who are all in danger for standing up for what’s right.

Head of the Judiciary, Ayatollah Sadegh Larijani
Dear Ayatollah Sadegh Larijani,

I urge you to release Atena Daemi immediately and unconditionally, and to quash her sentence and conviction. I also call on you to ensure that she is granted access to the specialized medical care she requires outside prison.

President of Brazil, Michel Temer
Dear President,

I demand that you ensure a prompt, thorough, impartial and independent investigation into the killing of human rights defender Marielle Franco. This must identify both the shooters and the people who ordered her killing, and the motivation for the crime. All those responsible must be brought to justice through a fair trial that meets international standards. I urge you to take all necessary measures to prevent threats and attacks against human rights defenders, including by restoring the programme of protection for human rights defenders.

President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa
Dear President,

I urge you and your government to protect Nonhle Mbuthuma. Please also conduct a full and proper investigation into the harassment and intimidation targeted at her and other activists as they stand up to the actions of Transworld Energy and Mineral Resources (TEM).

Minister of Interior, Arsen Avakov
Dear Minister,

I urge you to publicly recognise and support the work of Vitalina Koval and others like her. Please ensure they can exercise their right to freedom of expression and assembly without fear of attacks. I also urge you to ensure an effective and impartial investigation is carried out into the attacks on Vitalina and other activists. Any person found responsible for the attacks must be brought to justice.
