For years, Zarema Musaeva and her family have been targeted because her oldest son, Abubakar, is a human rights lawyer. Now, Zarema Musaeva is in prison. Her health is deteriorating rapidly.
In January 2022, Zaema was abducted from her apartment in Central Russia.
CCTV footage shows her being taken into a snowy street wearing no winter coat and no shoes. Her abductors forced her into a car and drove away.
She was taken to Chechnya and forced into “administrative detention” for “petty hooliganism”. Later, she was charged with “violence dangerous to the life or health of a police officer.”
On 1 February, a Chechen politician shared a video on Instagram, threatening the family.
He said, “We will pursue you until we cut off your heads and kill you”.
The Head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, has said that the right “place” for the family was “in prison or in the ground” and that the family “will no longer be able to walk freely enjoying life.”
Because of Abubakar’s activism, dozens of his relatives have been abducted and tortured in secret detention. His father has been forced to resign from his job. Now, his mother is detained.
