CAMBODIA: Mother Nature Cambodia youth activists have courageously defended the environment for years, but their activism has come at a high cost. In 2020, three of the activists were arrested for peacefully demonstrating against the infilling of a lake. A year later, three more activists were arrested while investigating the pollution of a river. In June 2024, the activists were sentenced to between six and eight years in prison. Demand their immediate freedom.
ECUADOR: Guerreras por la Amazonía (Warriors for the Amazon) are fighting to protect their communities from gas flares, which are causing toxic fumes and environmental degradation in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Instead of being celebrated for their bravery, the young defenders face stigma and violent intimidation. Call on Ecuador to eliminate gas flares and protect climate defenders.
HONDURAS: Juan López was a loving father and husband. Since 2015, he tirelessly defended his local environment in northern Honduras from mining and energy projects, which have threatened local rivers and forests, but in 2024, he was shot dead by a masked gunman. The alleged hitman and his accomplices have been charged and are in pre-trial detention, but those who ordered Juan’s murder have not been held accountable. Demand justice for Juan López.
KYRGYZSTAN: Makhabat Tazhibek was head of one of the most prominent investigative media outlets in Kyrgyzstan, uncovering alleged corruption at the highest levels and reporting on deeply rooted social issues like inequality. This crucial work was not without risks. In January 2024, the authorities raided Makhabat’s home, arrested her, and she is now serving a six-year sentence on baseless charges. Demand Makhabat's freedom.
MADAGASCAR: Mr Damisoa and his family fled their home in the famine-stricken Androy region of southern Madagascar. Now, he and others who were displaced by famine and are now living in Boeny, continue to live in harsh conditions, where access to food, clean water and healthcare is extremely limited. Demand support for Damisoa and others displaced by drought across Madagascar.
MYANMAR: Sai Zaw Thaike is a photojournalist in Myanmar. He travelled to Rakhine State, determined to report on the aftermath of Cyclone Mocha when it slammed into the country in May 2023. But after a week there, Sai Zaw was arrested. He was interrogated, beaten and in September 2023, sentenced by a military tribunal to 20 years in prison with hard labour. Sai Zaw should be able to report freely, but instead, he is locked up, enduring beatings and periods of solitary confinement. Demand Sai Zaw Thaike's immediate freedom.
NORWAY: Ellinor Guttorm Utsi is an Indigenous Sámi woman and a passionate leader fighting to protect her community’s ancient reindeer-herding way of life in northern Norway. With the Norwegian government trying to introduce industrial wind-power projects that threaten Sámi reindeer-herding communities’ lands, Ellinor is fighting to ensure Sámi voices are heard and their rights are respected, but time is running out. Call on Norway to listen to Ellinor and the Sámi People, and help them protect their land, livelihoods and culture.
SOUTH AFRICA: Unecebo Mboteni was a three-year-old who died after falling into a pit toilet at his pre-school in South Africa. One year on, and his family still has no answers. No parent should have to bury their child because the government ignored their basic right to safety. Demand justice for Unecebo Mboteni.
TUNISIA: Sonia Dahmani is currently imprisoned and faces many years behind bars. Her crime? Speaking out against racism, inhumane prison conditions, and for defending human rights. Sonia is a lawyer and media commentator who has dedicated her life to defending human rights. On 11 May 2024, masked policemen raided the Tunisian Bar Association in Tunis, arrested Sonia and detained her in Manouba prison, where she has been held ever since. Call on the Tunisian authorities to release Sonia immediately and unconditionally.
RUSSIA: Mark Kislitsyn, a transgender man and human rights activist, was sentenced to 12 years in a penal colony on charges of “high treason” after donating a small amount for humanitarian aid to Ukraine. He is imprisoned in a women’s colony, where he is forced to wear women’s clothing, denied gender-affirming medical care, and repeatedly placed in punishment cells. Call on Russian authorities to quash his conviction, ensure his safety in detention, and secure his immediate release.
