In recent weeks Grace Tame, Brittany Higgins and Dhanya Mani have reminded us that there is still so much to do to ensure that survivors of sexual assault have access to justice.
Despite improvements in the lives of women and girls as a result of the women’s rights movement, women in Australia continue to experience violence, sexism, and misogyny. Trans women and gender diverse people experience sexual violence at twice the rate of the general population.
Australia has signed up to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. This means that it committed to take action so Australian women can enjoy their fundamental rights and freedoms.
We have to be frank. This isn’t happening. The Australian government isn’t doing enough.
Our leaders - and particularly Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese - must stand up for women’s and girls' rights. They need to take action so that every single woman and girl in this country will be safe.
Together, we can pressure our leaders to commit to building an Australia where women and girls are safe. Please take action now and call on our leaders to ensure women's rights are protected and defended.
