Prime Minister,
Climate change threatens people’s human rights to housing, health, food and water, and more. People across Australia and around the world are already suffering from the impacts of climate change.
Floods, heatwaves and bushfires are destroying hundreds of homes in Australia, displacing thousands each year, pushing more families into homelessness as the country faces a housing crisis. As our farmers face more droughts, the cost of food and groceries continues to skyrocket. Families are having to choose between putting dinner on the table and getting the healthcare they need. People on Boigu and Saibai in the Torres Strait can no longer grow their traditional vegetables because the soil has been ruined by sea water inundation.
The science is clear that climate change is being driven by coal, oil, and gas companies. Government policies should not support companies which threaten the human rights of people in Australia and around the world.
I call on you to introduce stronger taxes on fossil fuel companies, including a 25% tax on export gas revenues to replace the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax, end fossil fuel subsidies, introduce a Climate Pollution Levy on big fossil fuel corporations to fill a Climate Compensation Fund that supports communities most at risk from climate change, and end government funding of fossil fuel projects.
Yours sincerely,
[Your name]
