Coal and gas companies are fueling climate change, profiting enormously at the expense of our human rights. Sign the petition now to call on the Albanese Government to put people before profits and stop coal and gas companies capitalising on climate destruction.

Australians continue to face mounting costs of living, a nationwide housing shortage, increased mortality and climate-driven extreme weather events, while coal and gas companies are reporting record-breaking profits.

The science is clear: coal and gas companies are the main drivers of climate change, and yet, the Albanese government continues to support and fund fossil fuel projects, prioritising profits and big business over the rights of everyday people.

The extraction and burning of fossil fuels is not just an environmental issue – it directly threatens our basic needs and safety.

  • Oil, coal, and gas facilities cause enormous health risks to people who live near them, including increased risks of cancer and developmental delays.
  • Increasing floods, heatwaves and bushfires continue to destroy hundreds of homes in Australia, displacing thousands each year, pushing more and more families into homelessness as the country already faces an extreme housing crisis.
  • As farmers face more droughts, the cost of food and groceries continues to skyrocket. Families are having to choose between putting dinner on the table and getting the healthcare they need.
  • In the Pacific, storm surges and rising sea levels are threatening people’s homes, livelihoods, and culture. People on Boigu and Saibai in the Torres Strait can no longer grow their traditional vegetables because the soil has been ruined by sea water inundation.

Climate change is happening right now. It’s impacting you and everyone you know. But together, we have the power to make a difference. Our future is not for sale.

Amnesty is calling on the Albanese government to:

  • Introduce stronger taxes on fossil fuel companies, including a 25% export tax,
  • Stop providing subsidies to companies that are violating human rights,
  • Introduce a Climate Pollution Levy on big fossil fuel corporations to fill a Climate Compensation Fund to support communities most at risk from climate change, and
  • End government funding of fossil fuel projects.

Sign the petition now to call on the Albanese Government to put people before profit, hold coal and gas companies accountable for climate change and fund a just transition to renewable energy rooted in respect for human rights.

Canberra ACT 2600

Prime Minister,

Climate change threatens people’s human rights to housing, health, food and water, and more. People across Australia and around the world are already suffering from the impacts of climate change.

Floods, heatwaves and bushfires are destroying hundreds of homes in Australia, displacing thousands each year, pushing more families into homelessness as the country faces a housing crisis. As our farmers face more droughts, the cost of food and groceries continues to skyrocket. Families are having to choose between putting dinner on the table and getting the healthcare they need. People on Boigu and Saibai in the Torres Strait can no longer grow their traditional vegetables because the soil has been ruined by sea water inundation.

The science is clear that climate change is being driven by coal, oil, and gas companies. Government policies should not support companies which threaten the human rights of people in Australia and around the world.

I call on you to introduce stronger taxes on fossil fuel companies, including a 25% tax on export gas revenues to replace the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax, end fossil fuel subsidies, introduce a Climate Pollution Levy on big fossil fuel corporations to fill a Climate Compensation Fund that supports communities most at risk from climate change, and end government funding of fossil fuel projects.

Yours sincerely,
