While we welcome the long overdue ceasefire in Gaza, the genocide is still ongoing. A ceasefire alone won’t end Israel’s genocide against Palestinians who continue to struggle for dignity, equal rights and justice under Israel’s illegal military occupation and system of apartheid.

Right now, Israel continues to create conditions designed to bring about the destruction of Palestinian men, women, and children: blocking aid; restricting people’s movements; and torturing prisoners. To truly end the genocide, we must restore humanitarian aid, lift unlawful restrictions, and hold Israeli officials accountable.

In a landmark 2024 report, Amnesty International’s research found sufficient basis to conclude that Israel has committed and is continuing to commit genocide against Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip following 7 October 2023.

The brutal onslaught  killed tens of thousands of people, wiped out entire families, flattened residential neighbourhoods, destroyed critical infrastructure and forcibly displaced 1.9 million Palestinians.

Australia’s continued support and assistance to Israel is shielding Israel from accountability or effective international scrutiny regarding its treatment of Palestinians. Diplomatic backing and impunity enable human rights abuses and war crimes, and further fuel the genocide in Gaza.

The international community’s seismic, shameful failure for over a year to press Israel to end its atrocities in Gaza, by first delaying calls for a ceasefire and then continuing arms transfers, is and will remain a stain on our collective conscience." Dr Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International Secretary General.

Together, we must act now by calling on Foreign Minister to take urgent steps to:

  • Oppose any attempts by Israel to establish a permanent military and Israeli civilian presence in Gaza, alter its borders and demographic make-up, or shrink its territory, including through any expanded buffer zones or the construction of permanent checkpoints;
  • Publicly recognise Israel is committing the crime of genocide;
  • Support efforts to investigate Israel for genocide and hold perpetrators to account;
  • Ensure unimpeded humanitarian aid access, and call to lift the Israeli blockade over Gaza strip;
  • Immediately suspend the direct and indirect supply, sale or transfer, to Israel of all weapons parts and other military equipment or aid;
  • Stop rendering aid to the occupation.

Add your name now and call on Foreign Minister to stop fuelling Genocide in Gaza.

Subject: Urgent Appeal to end the genocide in Gaza

Senator the Hon Penny Wong,

I am writing to you to take necessary measures to immediately stop the ongoing genocide against Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip. While we welcome the long overdue ceasefire, Palestinian people continue to struggle for dignity, equal rights and justice under Israel’s illegal military occupation and system of apartheid.  Over the past year, Israel’s brutal onslaught and relentless attacks on Gaza have brought unprecedented levels of death and destruction in the occupied Gaza Strip, and a deplorable catalogue of violations and crimes.

Amnesty International’s report titled “‘You feel like you are subhuman’: Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza” provides research findings and legal analysis to support the conclusion that Israel has committed and is committing genocide in Gaza. The report concludes that during the nine-month period under review, Israeli forces committed acts prohibited under the Genocide Convention, namely killing, causing serious bodily or mental harm, and deliberately inflicting on Palestinians in Gaza conditions of life calculated to bring about their physical destruction. These acts were committed with the specific intent to destroy Palestinians in Gaza.

Australia’s continued support and assistance to Israel is shielding Israel from accountability or effective international scrutiny regarding its treatment of Palestinians. Diplomatic backing and impunity enable human rights abuses and war crimes, and further fuel the genocide in Gaza.

We therefore call on you to:

  • Publicly recognise that Israel is committing the crime of genocide.
  • Support efforts to investigate Israel for genocide.
  • Take urgent steps to bring an end to all Israeli actions in Gaza which may amount to genocide, including by ensuring as a first step that Israel duly implements all provisional measures ordered by the ICJ since 26 January 2024.
  • Immediately suspend the direct and indirect supply, sale or transfer, to Israel of all weapons parts and other military equipment or aid.
  • Oppose any attempts by Israel to establish a permanent military and Israeli civilian presence in Gaza, alter its borders and demographic make-up, or shrink its territory, including through any expanded buffer zones or the construction of permanent checkpoints.
  • Adopt adequate policies to ensure that private legal entities registered in your jurisdiction cease the provision of military services, technology and supplies used by Israel in its military operations in Gaza.

Sincerely,
