Environmental activist Samir Flores Soberanes was shot dead in February at his home in Mexico.

He had been a vocal opponent against a proposed power project, the Proyecto Integral Morelos, which could threaten the lands and waters of south-east Mexico.

Human rights defenders and journalists continue to be threatened, harassed, attacked and killed in Mexico.

Together the Amnesty movement has helped many environmental rights defenders, worldwide.

If we raise our voices together, we can make sure Samir’s death is not in vain, and that this tragedy leads to greater protection for others in Mexico defending their rights to clean water and land.

Tell the Mexican authorities to conduct an investigation and hold Samir’s killers to account.

Dear Governor,

I am writing in relation to the killing of Samir Flores Soberanes, member of the Front of Peoples inDefence of the Earth and Agua, a grassroots collective dedicated to protecting the environment andthe territory in the states of Morelos, Puebla and Tlaxcala. On 20 February, Samir was killed outside his house by an unknown group that shot him four times, twice in the head.

He had received written death threats in the past and was beaten by an unknown group in October 2018. The day before his killing, Samir attended an information session on the thermal-electric project “Proyecto Integral Morelos” where he expressed concerns about the human rights and social impacts of the project.

I urge you to conduct a prompt, thorough and impartial investigation of Samir Flores Soberanes’ killing, taking into account the possibility of the attack being in retaliation for his activities as an environmental, land and territory defender.

Yours Sincerely,
