On 27 December 2024, the Israeli military raided Kamal Adwan hospital and arbitrarily detained its director, Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, along with other medical staff and patients. The raid put the hospital, the last functioning major medical facility in the North Gaza governorate, out of service. Sign the petition calling for his immediate release.
This was not the first attack. In October 2024, Israeli forces raided the same hospital, detaining medical staff and patients. Despite these raids that put the hospital out of service, it was thanks to Dr Hussam Abu Safiya’s efforts and those of his colleagues that the hospital managed to re-open and resume treating those in desperate need.
His courage saved countless lives. Now we must save his.
Like many health workers before him, Dr Hussam Abu Safiya was detained in the course of caring for his patients and carrying out his medical duties. In February, the Commander of the Southern Command of the Israeli army issued an order to detain Dr Hussam Abu Safiya under the Unlawful Combatants Law. This law enables prolonged detention without charges or trial, stripping detainees of any meaningful judicial review or due process rights.
In July 2025, Amnesty learned that Dr Abu Safiya and others detained alongside him at Ofer prison were aggressively assaulted by security officers. Dr Abu Safiya was beaten for almost 30 minutes non-stop, causing damage to his back, face and neck.
During the assault, his glasses, which were recently provided to him following a request by his lawyer after an extended delay, were broken.
Dr Abu Safiya continues to be held in extremely poor conditions, confined in an underground cell with minimal food and subjected to medical neglect.
Israeli authorities must immediately release him. Sign the petition calling for Dr Hussam Abu Safiya’s immediate release, along with the other hospital staff and patients who were arbitrarily detained and forcibly disappeared on 27 December 2024.
