SAY NO, ACT NOW

When authoritarian practices go unchallenged, they do not stay contained. That’s why, together, we must say NO to tyranny. Right now it’s happening in countries right across the globe - including the USA.

Mahmoud Khalil was targeted for exercising his rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, protesting in support of Palestinian rights and against the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Transferred across the country in 30 hours, shackled, and blocked from attending the birth of his child. He listened to his wife give birth over the phone, from a detention cell hundreds of miles away.

Mahmoud’s detention is not an isolated case. Across the USA, activists and academics face the same tactics: detention without charge, law weaponised as punishment, speech silenced through fear. This is what Amnesty has documented before.

  • In Afghanistan, where women have been fully erased from public life, any woman who dares to resist risks brutal physical punishment or death.
  • In China, where Tibetan culture and religion are being systematically dismantled, more than a million people from the Uyghur and other minorities have been arbitrarily detained, and journalists are imprisoned for reporting the truth.
  • In Myanmar, where the junta uses sweeping national security laws to silence anyone who speaks out - and journalists, activists and ordinary citizens who speak out are routinely detained, tortured and killed.

Amnesty has a counter-playbook. And it works. But only when it is funded -and only when it is deployed early, before resistance becomes impossible. Donate today to help fund the counter-playbook against authoritarianism.
