Thousands of civilians have been killed in the escalation of violence in Israel and Gaza. The severity and significance of this chapter of the conflict is unprecedented. As this humanitarian crisis unfolds, Amnesty International has been researching, monitoring, and documenting human rights violations, verifying evidence using our Crisis Evidence Lab, and campaigning for the protection of civilians. We simply cannot allow this escalation of violence to continue.

Amnesty International's decades long research in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and Israel means we were well-placed to respond when the latest escalation of violence in the world's longest occupation occurred. Amnesty remains one of only two international human rights organisations with teams on-the-ground in the area.

As a result, Amnesty has been impartially documenting the escalation in violations of international humanitarian and human rights law by Israel, Hamas and other armed groups, including deaths of civilians resulting from horrific and indiscriminate attacks on civilians, civilian areas, and infrastructure.

From interviewing witnesses and survivors, to the cutting-edge research of our Crisis Evidence Lab, we are gathering evidence and documenting war crimes to help bring perpetrators to justice. Amnesty's research was cited as evidence given by South Africa against Israel on 29 December 2023 before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip. This demonstrates the importance and power of the detailed and meticulous research Amnesty undertakes and how it is used to help bring perpetrators to justice.

“We are deeply alarmed by the mounting civilian death tolls in Gaza, Israel and the occupied West Bank and urgently call on all parties to the conflict to abide by international law and make every effort to avoid further civilian bloodshed. Under international humanitarian law all sides in a conflict have a clear obligation to protect the lives of civilians caught up in the hostilities,” said Agnès Callamard Amnesty International’s Secretary General.

“Deliberately targeting civilians, carrying out disproportionate attacks, and indiscriminate attacks which kill or injure civilians are war crimes. Israel has a horrific track record of committing war crimes with impunity in previous wars on Gaza. Palestinian armed groups from Gaza, must refrain from targeting civilians and using indiscriminate weapons, as they have done in the past, and most intensively in this event, acts amounting to war crimes.”
