In an ideal world journalists would be able to do their work freely

Yet, every day, journalists around the world face the threat of intimidation, censorship, imprisonment and torture for their efforts to report on human rights violations. Those responsible for attacking and killing journalists very rarely face justice.

In countries such as Mexico and Pakistan, owning a press card is so dangerous that many media professionals end up quitting their jobs altogether, out of utter fear.

Just recently, journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were sentenced to 7 years in jail because of their work covering the genocide in Myanmar. They have effectively been silenced in a politically-motivated decision, with the sole purpose of protecting the authorities.

In the Philippines, journalists Maria Ressa, a multi-award-winning journalist, has been harassed for her fearless reporting of President Duterte's "war on drugs". She faces 7 court cases in a campaign to silence critics of the Philippine government.

We’re on a mission to help journalists do their work

There’s much to do but we have already helped free many courageous reporters - like Eskinder Nega from Ethiopia or Shawkan from Egypt - and we will continue as long as journalists are persecuted.

But we need your support. Please donate today to protect freedom of the press.

Your donation will have a real impact as it will allow us to act immediately in the following ways:

  • Researching cases of journalists being persecuted by their governments
  • Getting media and public attention on these cases
  • Putting pressure on governments through lobbying, events and protests

We’re 100% independent and always will be

Amnesty doesn’t accept funding from governments or political organisations. This financial independence means we’re free to campaign with objectivity and impartiality and to defend human rights worldwide.

All donations of $2 and over are tax deductible in Australia.
