Kids as young as 10 are being locked up and transported in police cages.
Some of those trips last more than five hours. Five terrifying hours in a dark cage, with no view of where they’re going and nothing but a tarp to protect them from the Northern Territory’s searing heat and torrential rain.
Despite Australia’s laws and the rough NT terrain, these children don’t even have the basic protection of seat belts to keep them safe from injury.
Treating children this way amounts to torture and it has to stop NOW.
RAISE THE AGE
After being transported in cages, kids as young as 10 are locked up behind bars, most of them even before their trial.
Between 2019 - 2020, Australian Governments pushed 499 children aged 10 - 13 into the criminal justice system.
When children this young are forced through a criminal legal process, and even worse imprisoned for months without trial, their health, wellbeing and future are put at risk. Punitive approaches simply don’t work.
After years of campaigning we were so excited to see the ACT become the first jurisdiction in Australia to make a commitment to bring its laws in line with UN standards by working to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14. Now it's time for the rest of the country to follow this leadership.
