WHEN YOU ARE RELENTLESS, REFUGEES ARE PROTECTED.

“We used to go to the studio,”  *Ali explains. “We recorded our songs and we played music without fear. But when the Taliban captured Afghanistan, our life completely changed…it became darkness. They destroyed our instruments. We were threatened by the Taliban. We were not allowed to sing or raise our voices or play instruments.”

The need for resettlement has never been greater. Approximately 100 million people are currently displaced around the world. In countries such as Ukraine, Afghanistan and Myanmar people are having to flee their homes because their lives and safety are at risk.

Australia’s annual intake of refugees remains at historically low levels. Despite promises to raise the humanitarian intake with this year's federal budget, it has stayed exactly the same at a dismal 13,750 places.

“Since 2020, Australia has reduced its annual humanitarian intake by 5,000 places each year, recent intakes remain at historically low levels. Those who do make it into the country are caught up in a cruel system where even today people are still held in offshore detention centres, incarcerated just for seeking protection. And those like me, who are allowed into the mainland, are trapped in endless limbo with no work or study rights. For me, that was perhaps the hardest thing to bear.”

-Zaki
Refugee Rights Campaigner, Amnesty International Australia

The rights of people seeking safety are simply fundamental human rights such as safe shelter, food and water, the opportunity to work, access to education and legal assistance. The abuse of refugee rights is an ongoing injustice we must challenge.

There are still people who have been trapped in Australia’s punishing offshore detention regime which was designed to deter and punish people seeking protection. There are still people who are trapped in limbo - brought to mainland Australia for medical treatment but told they can’t stay or have study rights.

Every moment counts. With your help, Amnesty can continue to be relentless in our fight for fair treatment of refugees looking to Australia for help.
