WHEN YOU ARE RELENTLESS, REFUGEES ARE PROTECTED.

UPDATE: Any donation you make until midnight 30th June will be matched, dollar for dollar (up to $150,000), by Amnesty supporters who want to help protect refugees and people seeking asylum. This means any donation you make today will go twice as far to help provide safety to those fleeing violence and persecution around the world.

The need for resettlement has never been greater. Approximately 100 million people are currently displaced around the world. In countries such as Ukraine, Afghanistan and Myanmar people are having to flee their homes because their lives and safety are at risk.

Every day, all over the world, people make one of the most difficult decisions in their lives: to leave their homes in search of a safer, better life. People, like Zaki:

“My family is Hazara, an ethnic group in Afghanistan that faces systemic prejudice and violence because of our race and religion. Between persecution and the war, my community and my family have suffered greatly. I lost my father and brother, and two of my cousins were nearly killed when a gunman opened fire in their classroom. In 2012 I became a Taliban target and we knew that it was no longer safe for me to remain in Afghanistan. I was only 17.

To leave your home, your family and everything you know is such a difficult decision. My mother made the heartbreaking choice to send me away when I was just a teenager, knowing that I might not survive the journey. But staying was no longer an option.”

-Zaki
Refugee Rights Campaigner, Amnesty International Australia

The rights of people seeking safety are simply fundamental human rights such as safe shelter, food and water, the opportunity to work, access to education and legal assistance. The abuse of refugee rights is an ongoing injustice we must challenge.

There are still people trapped in devastatingly inhumane Australian offshore detention centres. There are still families around the world who are in danger as we speak. Whether they are fleeing the war in Ukraine or the Taliban in Afghanistan the need for resettlement has never been greater and we must continue to fight for those who are in danger right now.

Every moment counts. With your help, Amnesty can continue to be relentless in our fight for fair treatment of refugees looking to Australia for help.
