DONATE TODAY TO CHALLENGE THE HORRORS OF INDEFINITE DETENTION.
Whether it's in a camp, a hospital or a hotel, indefinite detention is a tool of suffering, defined by surveillance, confinement and indignity.
As war tears apart communities across the globe, those seeking safety should have every right to turn to peaceful countries like Australia. Instead, Australia greets them with one of the most punitive refugee policies in the world.
Their arrival in Australia is simply another horrific chapter in their relentless journey. Australia's cruel offshore processing system is only one part of our interlinked system combining various forms of abuse and legal limbo.
In the words of Mostafa Azimitabar (Moz), “It is a system designed to break the human spirit.”
In offshore detention centres, which have included Christmas Island, Nauru, and Papua New Guinea, refugees who have attempted to enter Australia, where they wish to apply for legal asylum, are instead rounded up into camps and placed into indefinite detention.
Here they experience abuse, sexual assault, arbitary violence and even murder. Through the introduction of Medevac, the Australian government brought hundreds of refugees from these horrific conditions to Australia to receive life- saving medical care.
But instead of providing refugees with the care and freedom they deserved, 193 people were placed into hotel detention. Confined for up to 23 hours per day, forced to undergo regular pat-downs and physical violations, this group of refugees simply traded one place of confinement for another. This must stop.
Only when we are relentless in our pursuit of justice can we put an end to the horrors of human rights abuses, conflict, and war. Donate today and show that you are relentless for refugees.
