Our vision is for everyone to have the right to express their sexuality and make decisions about their own lives, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. Led by our activists and allies, together, we can end LGBTQIA+ conversion practices and fight for equality and anti-discrimination.
The conversion practices movement, also known as Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Change Efforts (SOGICE), makes pseudoscientific claims that people can change their sexual orientation or gender identity.
For decades, conversion practices have been responsible for causing irreparable harm to LGBTQIA+ Australians.
Research and the testimonies of survivors have revealed that 10% of LGBTQIA+ Australians are at risk of conversion practices.
Young people are often the target of these harmful practices, at a time when they should be receiving support, education and understanding.
Thanks to the advocacy of survivors and allies, Victoria, Queensland and the ACT have shown leadership on this issue and taken steps to protect LGBTQIA+ people from harmful conversion practices.
All other jurisdictions have failed to legislate to adequately address and ban these practices.
Stand with us and with the LGBTQIA+ community. Together, we can pressure Australian governments to work with survivors groups to draft effective legislation to put an end to conversion practices.
Amnesty International has signed onto the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Change Efforts (SOGICE) Survivor Statement calling on the Australian Government to end conversion practices. By signing this petition you are also endorsing the SOGICE Survivor Statement.
For 60 years, Amnesty has been shining a light in the darkness to prevent abuses, ensure accountability and improve lives. As a 10 million strong movement of everyday people joining together to challenge injustice and defend human rights, our voices are powerful enough to create change. Together we are unstoppable.
