Our vision is for Australia to become a nation where women and girls live free of gender-based violence and discrimination - this is a human right. Together, we can pressure our leaders to commit to ensuring women and girls safety, which includes better legal protections and access to justice.

Grace Tame, Brittany Higgins and Dhanya Mani have reminded us that there is still so much to do to ensure that survivors of sexual assault have access to justice.

Despite improvements in the lives of women and girls as a result of the women’s rights movement, women in Australia continue to experience violence, sexism, and misogyny. Trans women and gender diverse people experience sexual violence at twice the rate of the general population.

Australia has signed up to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. This means that it is committed to take action so Australian women can enjoy their fundamental rights and freedoms.

We have to be frank. This isn’t happening. The Australian government isn’t doing enough.

We need to work together to call on our leaders to commit to systemic change and to an Australia where women and girls are safe, and their human rights are protected and defended.

For 60 years, Amnesty has been shining a light in the darkness to prevent abuses, ensure accountability and improve lives. As a 10 million strong movement of everyday people joining together to challenge injustice and defend human rights, our voices are powerful enough to create change. Together we are unstoppable.

Take action on even more issues you care about: Anti-RacismClimate JusticeIndigenous Justice, LGBTQIA+ Rights, Refugee Rights

Prime Minister the Hon Anthony Albanese MP

Dear Prime Minister Anthony Albanese,

On 17 August 1983 Australia signed the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

In doing so, and in accordance with Article 3 of CEDAW, Australia committed to take all appropriate measures to ensure the full development and advancement of women, for the purpose of guaranteeing them the exercise and enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms on a basis of equality with men.

In recent weeks Grace Tame, Brittany Higgins and Dhanya Mani have reminded us that there is still so much to do to ensure that women in Australia can enjoy their human rights and fundamental freedoms on the basis of equality with men.

As leaders, we call on you to commit to systemic change and to an Australia where women and girls are safe, and their human rights are protected and defended.

Yours sincerely,
