URGENT: CHIP IN FOR ADS DEMANDING A LASTING CEASEFIRE
UPDATE 22 December, 2023: After many delays the United Nations Security Council has adopted a compromised resolution calling for “urgent steps to immediately allow safe and unhindered and expanded humanitarian access” to Gaza and creating “the conditions for a sustainable cessation of hostilities”. This follows a stronger resolution from the UN General Assembly on 12 December calling for a ceasefire. Amnesty International considers this an important but insufficient step. Now, the Australian government must use every opportunity to continue to call for an immediate ceasefire and unfettered humanitarian access to Gaza.
Civilians are paying the price with over 1,200 Israelis killed, over 200 hostages still missing and over 14,000 Palestinians killed, many of whom are women and children. Countless lives have been shattered, ripped apart, and upended.
As news breaks on a humanitarian pause in fighting, we have to be clear that a four day pause is not enough for the people of Gaza. The pause will allow for the delivery of desperately needed aid, but four days isn’t long enough to address the catastrophic suffering or relieve the horrifying harm to civilians. The international community must urgently advocate for this truce to evolve into a sustained ceasefire. And after four days, we can’t allow bombs to once again be dropped on the people of Gaza. For death and destruction to continue. The 2.2 million people of Gaza need a lasting ceasefire. They need our government to be advocating for one, so the people of Gaza can live free from bombs, not for days, but for their whole lives.
As an ally of Israel, the Australian Government has a vital role to play. A call for a sustained, meaningful and effective ceasefire from our Government would put immense pressure on Israel to stop the bombardment, preventing further loss of civilian lives and ensuring people in Gaza can access much more life-saving aid. The pressure is mounting on Foreign Minister Penny Wong: we need her to know that a pause isn’t enough, we need a lasting ceasefire. That’s why it is crucial we act now.
With your help, we can take out full page advertisements in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age Newspapers and flood the internet with digital ads for two weeks on Fairfax, Nine and News Corp, The Guardian, Mamamia and BuzzFeed to show Penny Wong that Australians want action now. Over 1.4 million Australians will see our ads urging the Australian Government to call for a sustained and meaningful ceasefire and help prevent further loss of civilian lives. You will be joining other Amnesty supporters from the movement of ten million people who have helped fund similar campaigns in the US. See an example below:
